Treasurer Jim Chalmers says it’s not yet known how many billions of dollars will need to be spent on flood recovery but it would mean a “substantial impact” on the federal budget.this morning, he said emergency experts were still completing complex assessments of flooded areas across Victoria.It’s role of government to step in when times are tough and things like this happen. There are payments which kick in, which are already kicking in.
He said fresh food would be impacted immediately and that a recent report found after an event like this there would be five days of fresh food supply at any one time. While homes have already been inundated by the Campaspe River, the Murray River is likely to exceed the major flood level of 94.4 metres on Thursday. Emergency services commissioner Andrew Crisp has given an update on Victoria’s flooding situation and has implored residents in flooded areas not to put themselves or emergengy service workers at risk.
