Devastated and frustrated families are calling for action from the Queensland government after they have had their lives changed by shocking acts of youth crime.
The state’s youth crime crisis has exploded in 2023 and Queenslanders are taking a stand on Wednesday by marching from the Edward Street gates of Brisbane City Botanic Gardens to Parliament House from 10am to 12pm.
Founder of Voice for Victims and organiser of the march Ben Cannon said the government’s approach to youth crime “has to change” as the crisis continues to grow in the state. Mr Cannon told the ABC he and his family “will never be the same people we were prior to that night” after his neighbour rugby union great Toutai Kefu’s home was allegedly invaded by four teenagers.
Voice for Victims founder and rally organiser Ben Cannon said it may be time for a new premier if Annastacia Palaszczuk can't find a solution for the ongoing youth crime crisis. Picture: Sky News Australia “This is a broken social system that’s creating these youths that end up in our lounge rooms angry and with knives. We’re not callous and saying all these kids need to be locked up, we’re saying these kids need help as much as we do.”
Russell and Ann Field are in full support of the rally after their son Matthew and his fiancée Kate Leadbetter who was pregnant with their unborn son were struck and killed by an intoxicated juvenile driving a stolen car two years ago.
