Despite being impeached by the House of Representatives, Vice President Sara Duterte appeared calm and collected during a press conference, assuring her supporters that she was prepared to face the challenge.
Two days after facing impeachment by the House of Representatives, Vice President Sara Duterte finally addressed the nation in a press conference held at the Office of the Vice President. Despite the gravity of the situation, Duterte appeared calm and composed, assuring her supporters that she remained unfazed by the proceedings. Duterte's media team had initially limited the press conference to a brief statement, with no room for questions.
However, the Vice President engaged with reporters for nearly 20 minutes, answering their queries with a smile and a sense of confidence. She even made light of the situation, comparing the pain of being impeached to being left by a boyfriend or girlfriend. Duterte's strategy seemed to be a two-pronged approach: reassuring her supporters that she was in control and projecting an image of strength to her political opponents. She declined to provide details about her legal strategy for the Senate trial, but she did emphasize that her team had been preparing for this possibility since November 2023. She also revealed that she had sent a message to her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, assuring him that everything would be alright. While she acknowledged that her father could offer advice to her legal team, she stated that he would not be taking the lead counsel role due to his age. The ball is now in the Senate's court, which will serve as the impeachment trial court. The timing of Duterte's impeachment is particularly sensitive, as it comes during Congress's three-month break before the 2025 midterm elections. With seven senators facing reelection, the question remains whether her impeachment case will move forward as scheduled
