The Victorian Auditor General has blasted the state government over the Commonwealth Games fiasco, finding it 'overstated' the cost of hosting the event when it pulled out last July and that the decision cost the state more than half a billion dollars.

The then Daniel Andrews Labor government signed a contract to host the 2026 Commonwealth games in April 2022 based on an estimated cost of $2.6 billion. According to the Auditor General’s report, the decision to host and then pull out of the games cost Victorians $589 million. “DJSIR's business case did not make a convincing argument that the benefits of hosting the Games outweighed the costs and risks,” the auditor general’s report revealed.
