The Greens will pressure the Victorian government to adopt a state-based ‘Big Bank Levy’ to raise $14 billion in 10 years to cover an expected budget blowout.
The Community and Public Sector Union has urged the Victorian government to slash the $177 million spent on consultants in the last financial year, up from $59 million in 2014/15, to save core public servant jobs which are now under threat.
The Department of Treasury and Finance secretary David Martine has written to the heads of each government department ordering them to detail plans to cut their budgets by 10 per cent, which the union estimates could equate to the loss of as many as 5,000 jobs. Mr Andrews is limited in any big asset sales to raise funds in the May budget given he has already moved to sell off the Land Titles Office, partially privatise VicRoads and sold a 50-year lease for the Port of Melbourne, as well as move to renationalise the State Electricity Commission.would spark trade and investment and denied any financial issues related to Victoria’s “big build” were discussed.
The proposed bank levy would raise between $4.5 billion and $14 billion, depending on whether it was set at 0.015 per cent or 0.05 per cent as a “quarterly bank levy on Victoria’s share of bank liabilities that are subject to the Australian government’s major bank levy”.
