Proponents of them say they reduce overdose rates and crime. Opponents argue they normalize drug behaviour and increase crime rates.

Even if it could be determined that safe injection sites increase or decrease crime rates in a particular neighbourhood, we would have to look at what happened to the crime rate in surrounding communities that do not have safe injection sites to get an accurate picture.

That said, injection sites have proven effective at preventing overdose deaths for the individuals using them. This point is generally not contested. Frequent complaints about safe injection sites undermining neighbourhoods have to do with public urination and defecation, improper needle disposal, an increase in petty theft and issues related to housing.The availability of public washrooms and increased enforcement with regard to needle disposal and petty crime can address those issues, but there is little evidence to link safe injection sites to contributing to the housing crisis.
