The Leafs captain and a former captain find different ways to support Matthews.
look back to this week as the turning point, then the work of John Tavares and Mark Giordano should not be forgotten.
“It’s pretty straightforward,” Giordano said. “He’s our best player and we can’t have him involved really in any fights or anything like that. It’s just the mentality of our group. When our top guys are in those situations, we’ve got to get in there.” It might have meant less if not for the win, which was guaranteed by Tavares’s scoring. He now leads the Leafs in both goals and points .
If there is a knock on Tavares as captain, it’s that he has probably deferred too much to Matthews. That’s partly due to Keefe’s use of his lines. In need of a goal, it’s the Matthews line that gets sent over the boards. Tavares remains one of the best players in the NHL in the space between the faceoff dots and the crease, as evidenced by what he did on his second goal. The Flyers had just scored, with Tavares in the penalty box, to get within one goal of the Leafs. He came out determined, deked defenceman Travis Sanheim, went hard to the net, corralled his own rebound and put the Leafs up 4-2.
