Kevin Arquero, a veteran chess player from Pasay City, emerged victorious in the Pozorrubio Town Fiesta Rapid Chess Tournament. He defeated Robert Halili in the final round to secure the title and a P10,000 prize.

Veteran chess player Kevin Arquero of Pasay City saved his best games down the stretch to rule Pozorrubio Town Fiesta Rapid Chess Tournament on Saturday at the 3rd floor of the Executive Building here. Arquero, who plays for the Philippine Army chess team, defeated erstwhile solo leader Robert Halili of Mabalacat City, Pampanga in the seventh and final round to finish with 6.5 points and claim the title.

Arquero receive the top purse of P10,000 for his effort in this event sponsored by Mayor Kelvin Tan, Vice Mayor Engineer Ernesto Salcedo III and SK Municipal Federation President Vince Karl Thirdy Sarmiento.'I am happy with my performance today. I did not start well but I finished strong,' said Arquero. Jhulo Goloran of Meycauayan City, meanwhile, defeated Genghis Imperial of Manila to score 6.0 points, tied with Halili and Romy Fagon of Urdaneta City.After the tie-break was applied, Goloran ended up at second place followed by Halili and Fagon.Halili earned P5,000, Goloran pocketed P3,000 and Fagon went home with the P2,000 prize. The fifth to 10th placers were Alexis Emil Maribao of Cavite City (5.5 points), Ricardo Batcho of Quezon City (5.5 points), Jenric Curt Aquino of Calasiao City, Pangasinan (5.5 points), Sherwin Tiu of Manila (5.0 points), Imperial (5.0 points) and Rodney Palaming of Urdaneta City, Pangasinan (5.0 points). Earlier, retired judge Jose Vallo and Vice Mayor Ernesto Salcedo III performed the ceremonial opening moves that kicked off the one-day tournament.Councilor Dennis Uy and Sarmiento were also present during the opening ceremony. Meanwhile, 11-year-old Henrick Marello Balanos was hailed as the top kiddie player from Pozorrubio.Before the tournament, Arena Grandmaster Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. held a 12-board simultaneous exhibition chess games, winning 11 of those matches.The only player who defeated Bernardino was 15-year-old Irish Ysabel Salcedo of Pozorrubio, Pangasinan.The tournament is part of Pozorrubio's grassroots development program for chess
