Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has responded to reports about a push within the Labor Party to revisit its negative gearing policy ahead of the next election.
Nine newspapers reported Labor’s National Conference in August will debate housing policy more broadly, which a delegate described as “five lines of fluff”.
“The government’s position is very clear and it’s a position for which we received a mandate at the 2022 election,” he told reporters. Labor’s platform at the time was to remove negative gearing on all properties that were purchased after a specific date unless they were new.Labor's stance on negative gearing under Bill Shorten proved unsuccessful at the 2016 and 2019 elections. The proposal seeks to finance the build of 30,000 new social and affordable homes over five years if passed.
