The 10-foot-tall carrot is a testament to the doggedness of Port Hardy residents who were determined to see the North Island Highway completed after decades of promises.
The big orange carrot standing proudly in Carrot Park in Port Hardy might be moved to a new patch to free up public space for community activities.
An interpretive “Historic Site” sign next to it notes that the carrot marks the northern end of the Island Highway and is a “symbol of government road building promises, dangled in front of North Island settlers since 1897.” Leighton Wishart, chair of the Filomi Days committee, suggested in a letter to council that the carrot be moved across the street to the end of the boulevard. Filomi Days — named for the fishing, logging and mining sectors — is the community’s annual July festival.
