Then in May last year, the government announced that the entire museum would close for eight years to make way for an $800-million replacement project — for which there was neither design nor site plan. Before long, it was apparent that the mammoth-choking pricetag coupled with lengthy closure of one of the city’s most popular attractions had been fatal to the plan.
The third floor remained closed. But the museum did quietly increase its admission fee to $18, having earlier reduced it to $5 in light of the closure of so many exhibits.
