Farnworth struggled Wednesday to contain speculation that the decision on policing services in Surrey was the first act in a long-term phase out of the RCMP as the provider of contract policing services in B.C. “We need to know which direction the federal government is going with contract policing because the current system is not sustainable in B.C.”

This week, the Toronto Star’s Ottawa bureau chief Tonda MacCharles reported that the federal government was already looking at phasing out the RCMP as a provider of “front-line day-to-day policing” on contracts to B.C. and other provinces. While the public safety minister tried to confine the day’s discussion to policing in Surrey, Premier David Eby added to the speculation about a provincial police force during a news conference of his own.
