‘Despite two years of headlines about this issue, there are apparently no federally funded dedicated police officers working on money laundering in B.C.’

VICTORIA — Ten days after receiving a second report on money laundering in B.C., Attorney-General David Eby called a press conference on Monday to release one of its findings piecemeal.

The finding goes a long way to explain “why we’ve so few investigations and prosecutions of money laundering in B.C.,” said Eby. “The answer to what is happening is apparently very little, if anything.” What were the 11 doing? He was then told that it was “really only five, due to training, illness and other issues.“ What were the five doing? Referring cases to the provincial civil forfeiture office. The revelation comes just two weeks after a generally supportive meeting between Eby and Bill Blair, the federal cabinet minister for border security and organized crime reduction.

Having bent over backward to give Blair and his colleagues the benefit of the doubt, he then called on Ottawa to play catch up. In asking Ottawa for help rather than blaming it for neglect, Eby admitted to an element of political expediency regarding the fall federal election.
