VICTORIA — Health Minister Adrian Dix took the high road this week in launching a measles immunization drive, avoiding the twin off-ramps of blame-placing and threats.
But on both aspects of the campaign, the health minister refused to be drawn into the negative side of the discussion. Didn’t want to talk about who was to blame for the declining vaccination rate. Wouldn’t speculate about taking stronger steps if voluntary vaccination fails to achieve the optimum of 95 per cent immunization.
Nor did he fault parents for losing the impetus to vaccinate their kids, or even losing track of whether they had been vaccinated. He even declined to rise to the bait when fielding a question about the anti-vaxxers, the movement against vaccinations. “We’re going to take advantage in a sense of the interest now to build on the momentum and ensure that people have a chance to get immunized right now,” he told reporters during a Wednesday media conference.
More resources, yes. But when asked about taking stronger measures to increase the vaccination rate, Dix again chose not to accentuate the negative.
