Larvicide is sprayed onto soil where it harms the root-eating grubs. It is being applied on large swaths of turf and smaller strips of grass around flowers, shrubs and trees.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is restricting movement of plant material and soil out of a large swath of Vancouver in an effort to contain an invasive Japanese beetle that has fed its way across the continent for decades and is now infesting the downtown area of the city.
The beetle first arrived in North America, likely as a hitchhiker on a boat, in 1916 and its gradual westward invasion began on the east coast, Normann said. It reached Portland and Seattle within the last decade or so, and has recently been seen chewing up plants in Vancouver, he said. Inside that broader containment zone are specific areas where the city plans to treat about 70 hectares of parks and public land this year with larvicide, and likely will do so for several more years to come, Normann said. The larvicide the city is using, Acelepryn, is not harmful to humans, pets or pollinators, according to staff. But they are asking people to stay out of the areas for 24 hours after treatment to give the larvicide time to work.
“We’re hopeful that we get a good chunk of them and then if they do come out they’ll stay in that area and put their larva back down we’ll treat again next year. Hopefully by the time we’re done, we’ll eradicate them and they won’t have a chance to spread.”
