The Vancouver firefighters\u0027 union has endorsed Mayor Kennedy Stewart for re\u002Delection, along with endorsing 10 councillor candidates.
“We’re pretty faithful to supporting those that recognize the issues the fire service in Vancouver has faced and shown commitment through their term,” said Lee Lax, vice-president of Vancouver’s Local 18 of the International Association of Fire Fighters.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
Kennedy Stewart is introduced at a mayoral debate at the Jewish Community Centre in Vancouver, BC, October 3, 2022.In addition to Stewart, the firefighters have endorsed eight incumbent councillors: Michael Wiebe, Adriane Carr and Pete Fry from the Green party, ABC Vancouver’s Lisa Dominato, Rebecca Bligh and Sarah Kirby-Yung, OneCity’s Christine Boyle, and COPE’s Jean Swanson. The other two council endorsements are for new candidates Iona Bonamis of OneCity and Devyani Singh of the Greens.
Asked about the decision to endorse every incumbent councillor seeking another council term except for one, Lax said: “Our relationship with the eight councillors we’re recommending for re-election, those councillors have been some of the strongest and most apt to listen to the concerns of firefighters.”
The firefighters’ announcement comes just after a series of high-profile endorsements in the Vancouver election. This includes last week’s announcement that the Vancouver Police Union was, for the first time in its history, publicly backing a candidate, saying they believe Ken Sim and an ABC majority would be the city’s best option.
