Vancouver Aquarium staff were surprised this week to discover a python stranded in the Amazon exhibit.
Hall had recently visited the Vancouver Aquarium with her two young children, Oscar and Rocco Staben, and their snake stuffies, after a visit to B.C. Children’s Hospital for an important MRI scan. Along the way, Pythie, the snake belonging to four-year-old Oscar, had been lost. That’s when aquarium staff jumped into action, making plans to return the toy, but not before giving Pythie the same treatment they offer to any lost, wounded animal that makes its way to the aquarium. Kelsey Smith, assistant manager of visitor experience, turned the snake over to head veterinarian Dr. Martin Haulena, who, along with the aquarium’s veterinary team, gave the snake a thorough physical exam.
“Care and connection are at the heart of everything we do at the Vancouver Aquarium,” said Karen Howe, the aquarium’s director of visitor experience. “Our team saw an opportunity to turn a sad experience to a truly memorable moment and, in true Vancouver Aquarium style, there was no shortage of helping hands.
