A pair of upcoming international exhibition games is not necessarily a be\u002Dall, end\u002Dall for Canadian players looking to participate in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but will weigh heavily for head coach John Herdman and his staff. Canada is setting up a training camp in Bratislava, Slovakia next week to prepare for two games in Vienna, Austria, against Qatar on Sept. 23, and Uruguay on Sept. 27.
“These are always difficult decisions,” Herdman said Friday from Bratislava. “The World Cup decisions in back in 2015, at the Women’s World Cup, was awful; every Olympic Games I’ve been to, it’s a tough time. This is the dream, this is what everyone’s dreamed of, and for some people, genuinely sacrificed and committed for.Article content
Canada needs to finish among the top two teams in its group to advance to the second round. In 1986 Canada did not score a goal and lost all three games as they were eliminated in the first round. Herdman named 27 players for the upcoming camp in Vienna, headlined by Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich, Jonathan David of Lille, Cyle Larin and Tajon Buchanan of Club Brugge, Stephen Eustaquio of FC Porto, Liam Millar of FC Basel, and Milan Borjan of Red Star Belgrade.
“For us, it’s about the enjoyment of the moment; it’s about recognizing that we’re the first Canadians in a long time to go into this new terrain and to embrace that experience and not to feel like the sands of time are running out,” Herdman said. “It’s about trusting the process and taking it step-by-step and closing certain gaps, and some of those gaps won’t actually be revealed until we play a team like Uruguay. That’s going to be a real tough test against a Tier-1, world-class opponent.
“With Atiba, it’s a tough situation and one that’s close to everyone’s heart at the moment,” Herdman said. “He has a bone bruise that he picked up in the preseason and those situations are very, very painful. For him, it’s doing everything he can to maintain fitness, while not being able to weight bare and that’s the biggest challenge for him, it’s taking a long time for him to progress.
