The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has described the conversion of vacant lots into pay parking spaces as a form of long term “win, win solution’’ even as it continues to look for viable options to resolve the country’s perennial traffic congestion problem.

DILG Undersecretary and spokesman Jonathan Malaya said local chief executives might have to exercise their convincing powers to entice vacant lot owners to accede to the proposal.

“Mayor Francis Zamora of San Juan City will be converting their idle lots owned by the City Government for parking purposes. In times like this, we need to think outside of the box. We encourage our mayors to step up and work closely with private homeowners and entities so that their idle and vacant lots can also be converted to pay parking spaces,” Malaya said.

He said the LGU can consider giving discounts in the payment of business permits and other regulatory fees to land owners to convince them to support the initiative. Malaya likewise appealed to the landowners to help the government by being open to partnership with their respective LGUs.
