The call was made in response to anger from spectators angered that a presentation on the use of washrooms by trans students was cut off.

The Waterloo board released an open letter on Jan. 20 to address the allegations. The letter said children had a right to be known by their gender of preference.“Simply because a parent or caregiver disagrees with Ministry of Education and Ontario Human Rights Commission directions does not give them the right to make false claims of pandering or facilitating child abuse or pedophilia,” the Waterloo board’s letter said.

OCDSB chair Lyra Evans, a trans woman, left the board chambers on Tuesday night after the man’s presentation started. “I had to wing it,” Kaplan-Myrth said. “We need a clearer plan for how we’re going to engage with the community.” But she does not want to see the school board move in the same direction as the police services board or to beef up security to the point where it discourages public participation.
