US to bolster military presence in Australia amid 'dangerous' China

The United States will bolster its navy and army presence in Australia as foreign and defence ministers from both countries commit to act as a “force for stability” against China’s increasing regional coercion.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Minister Penny Wong were joined by their US counterparts for thein Washington on Wednesday in what was the first meeting of its kind since Anthony Albanese and Labor won the Federal Election.

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin announced the two countries had agreed to “deepen” cooperation through bolstering American military presence in Australia. The secretary also flagged greater trilateral military collaboration with Japan, which will see further military exercises in the future. And the Secretary of State acknowledged Australia was “no stranger” to China’s economic coercion and committed to standing by Canberra in opposition to Beijing’s “pressure tactics”."When it comes to Chinese economic coercion, Australia has done an extraordinary job of standing up to that coercion and coming out in a better and stronger place."

The United States will continue to further bolster Australia’s own military capabilities but the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister dismissed suggestions of procuring the US’ new state of the art Bomber.
