In a feisty performance in his State of the Union address on Thursday , he sought to convince his Democratic Party, his rival Donald Trump and the American people that his passion is undimmed, and he will go the distance and not drop out at the Democrat convention.
Mr Trump refuses to accept the results of any election he doesn’t win, tearing at America’s hallowed institutional pillars to do so. Yet nobody channels the anxieties of middle-American voters better than he does.By contrast, Mr Biden has presided over a remarkable soft landing from the pandemic and inflation, but nobody has won re-election from his current 38 per cent approval rating.introducing the economy in Thursday’s address as “the greatest comeback story never told”.
Yet Bidenomics was initially blamed for driving inflation higher than necessary when the economy was struggling, and rapidly pushing national debt to $US34 trillion or 123 per cent of GDP. But it’s now helping America’s remarkable recession-free recovery and rebound in productivity. If voters have overlooked the economy, it’s been hard to look past the own goals of immigration, which ranks jointly in voter concerns. Few things make governments look more hapless than losing control of sovereign borders, and the over-hasty removal of Trump and COVID-era restrictions has seen over 6 million “encounters” with illegal migrants in the last three years.
