MANILA - The United States stands with treaty ally the Philippines in the face of harassment by China’s coast guard in the South China Sea and remains deeply concerned about “intimidation” by Beijing, a senior US official said on May 2.

“We remain deeply concerned by continued intimidation and harassment of Philippine vessels as they continue to undertake really routine patrols within the Philippine exclusive economic zone,” he said in a teleconference from the United States.Kritenbrink also said the United States and its partners recognised the importance of maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait.

Marcos said the region had “arguably the most complicated geopolitical situation in the world right now.” Under Rodrigo Duterte, Marcos’ anti-US predecessor, relations soured as he sought to court China while openly rebuking Washington.
