The United States has donated a further $100 million to the earthquake-stricken regions of Turkey and Syria as the death toll from the disaster climbs to above 44,000.

In his first trip to NATO ally Turkey in his role as Secretary of State, Mr Blinken announced additional aid on top of the $85 million already given by President Joe Biden.

"This is going to be a long-term effort," he told reporters gathered at the joint US-Turkish Incirlik Air Base. The additional $100 million in aid will be equally divided between emergency refugee and migration funds and humanitarian assistance, with $50 million allocated to each.
