Democrat Adam Smith, who is a strong proponent of the AUKUS deal, said the US needed to better share information and technology with allies such as Australia.

“One of the big problems right now with Australia is that while AUKUS is a great idea – it’s got a lot of promise – we have got to share stuff if we’re going to be able to be effective in building partnerships,” Mr Smith told the Brookings Institution on Wednesday . “Gosh, you go into those export controls. I know, you shouldn’t be selling nuclear launch codes or whatever, but there are times when the restrictions are such that if you have, like, a [mechanical] bolt that happens to go into a military thing, and then it goes over here, then you can’t sell it over here because it goes over there,” Mr Smith said.
Republican Congressman Ken Buck, who sits on the Foreign Affairs Committee with oversight on Pacific and Non-proliferation issues, toldthat Congress should always work towards strengthening its strategic military partnerships.“I think we should do everything we can to help Australia and everybody else around China,” Mr Buck said.
Mr Smith also warned that being too restrictive with export controls under AUKUS hindered the development of leadership in America’s own military industrial base.
