A rescue operation is underway after a United States military aircraft carrying more than 20 personnel crashed in the Tiwi Islands.
A United States military officer has been critically injured and others have been rescued after their aircraft crashed off the Northern Territory coast during a training drill.
Three personnel were transported by Careflight to Royal Darwin Hospital, one in critical condition and the other two stable.The Department of Defence said the incident occurred during Exercise Predator's Run 2023. "At this critical early stage, our focus is on the incident response and ensuring the safety of those involved."Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking in Karratha, said the Australian Defence Force is working with its US partners to offer any assistance needed.
"We are focused on providing practical assistance on the ground. Obviously this is a regrettable incident."
