The three United States marines killed in the Osprey helicopter crash on the Tiwi Islands north of Darwin have been named.

It has been confirmed Major Tobin Lewis, 37, Captain Eleanor LeBeau, 29, and Corporal Spencer Collart, 21, were killed in the crash on Sunday morning.

Now, Captain LeBeau has been praised for her heroic piloting and managing to land the aircraft in such a way that the 20 other personnel on board survived. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of three respected and beloved members of the MRF-D family," he said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and with all involved. At present, we remain focused on required support to the ongoing recovery and investigative efforts."

Members of the local community left dozens of small candles at Darwin's cenotaph in honour of the deceased marines and prayed for the injured servicemen and women who remain in hospital.
