Scientists engineer a nanoscale structure that accelerates ion transport by 10x, can revolutionize batteries and brain-computer interfaces.
This nanoscale structure allows ions to travel at speeds ten times faster than any previously recorded in mixed organic ion-electronic conductors. They have detailed the creation of a nanoscale structure that enables ions to move at speeds ten times faster than previously observed in mixed organic ion-electronic conductors.
“These types of conductors hold a lot of potential because they allow movement of both ions and electrons at once, which is critical for battery charging and energy storage,” added the press release. By mimicking the structure of ion channels found in cell membranes, they engineered a nanometer-sized channel lined with hydrophilic molecules., forming an electrolyte solution. Therefore, the hydrophilic lining of the channel could attract the ions, effectively creating a dedicated “superhighway” for their movement.
The researchers also demonstrated the ability to dynamically control the flow of ions within these nanochannels. By using chemical reactions to switch the channel between hydrophilic and hydrophobic states, they can effectively open and close the “ion superhighway.”
