"Steps have been taken to minimize further damage, and we have already lined up contractors to make repairs at many of our sites," Jameson said, adding that staff members are doing assessments without power and in the dark, so it will take time before the province has a clear timeline for those repairs.

Economic Growth Minister Bloyce Thompson said the rebate will cover the pay period from Sept. 25 to Oct. 8, and applications will be open for the program next week. For employees whose employer does not take up the rebate, Thompson said the province will try to find a way to provide them support. However, he was unable to say whether any supports directly applied to employees were in the works.Waste collection is another issue facing Islanders post-Fiona, as many still without power are forced to clear their fridges of thawed and spoiled food.
