In a presentation to Health P.E.I. staff and reporters on January 26, Health Minister Ernie Hudson said the new day program will be offered to Island residents of all genders older than 18 years of age. The program, offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday, will provide treatment spaces for up to 20 people. Twelve of these spaces will be reserved for individuals living in the community. Another eight spaces will be reserved for individuals who will also live on-site for a temporary period.
SIda Pienaar, a clinical psychologist, said the program is based around equipping clients with stronger emotional intelligence. The program will focus on building skills such as recovery goal setting, building coping skills, building community connections and life skills. The program will be staffed by registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, pharmacists, occupational therapists, residential care workers and social workers.
"It's a 28-day program. So we cannot at this stage facilitate people...due to be here for a longer term. The next house that's going to be built will actually be available for that purpose. So that will be people who have the ability to stay for longer," Dr. Pienaar said. A break room at a new Health PEI mental health day treatment facility near the Hillsborough Hospital.
