Councils in England will share a new £295 million investment fund to overhaul waste collection services across the country
Every household in Merseyside is set to see a major change to bin collections in less than two years. The government had said all councils across England must be recycling food waste by April 1 2026 after legislation was passed in 2021. The new food waste policy was discussed at the latest Overview and Scrutiny Committee for Regeneration and Skills at Southport Town Hall.
Food waste can then be sent to anaerobic digestion facilities rather than needlessly lost to landfill. The government hopes the re-directing of food waste to these plants will generate more sustainable energy to power homes and businesses, and cut down the more than 18 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions associated with this waste.
