It is a move that divides cricket players and punters alike — the Mankad. But how did this sensational Indian cricketer become synonymous with the most debated rule in the game?
Just a few deliveries later, the Toowoomba-born 35-year-old again tries to gain an advantage by leaving his crease early. In Mankad's mind, he has no choice. He whips around and takes the bails off. Brown, by the letter of the law, is run out.
This time, the great Bradman stands at the ready at the other end of the pitch, while Brown again stands alongside Mankad. The press box erupts in heated debate. Should Mankad have warned Brown? Should the rule be changed? Should the umpire have given it out? Is it in the much-vaunted Spirit of the Game?

Hurst using a Mankad against Pakistan in 1979 infuriated the Pakistani players.
