OceanGate\u0027s submersible, the Titan, now the focus of a search\u002Dand\u002Drescue operation, is a relative rarity in maritime history
last year reported that it had “about as much room as a minivan” for its single pilot and four crew.
Stockton Rush, CEO of OceanGate, the company the built and operates the sub, told that reporter: “There are certain things that you want to be buttoned down. The pressure vessel is not MacGyver at all, because that’s where we worked with Boeing and NASA and the University of Washington. Everything else can fail, your thrusters can go, your lights can go. You’re still going to be safe.
The specs for the Titan indicate that it has 96 hours of life support for a crew of five, and four electric thrusters – two vertical, two horizontal – for propulsion. It can descend to a depth of 4,000 metres, slightly more than the 3,800-metre depth where the Titanic is resting on the ocean floor. Incidents involving such tiny submersibles are relatively rare. In 2017, the UC3 Nautilus, capable of carrying eight crew members, sank just outside the harbour of Copenhagen. Its owner, Danish entrepreneur Peter Madsen, was rescued but subsequently convicted of the murder of journalist Kim Wall. It was determined that he sank the craft to destroy evidence of the crime.
