SIBU: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) says it did not instruct unlicensed bird’s nest operators to suspend their operations.

On the contrary, SFC said it had been actively advising operators to apply for the necessary licences to comply with rules and regulations under the Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998 and promoting the sustainable management of the bird's nest industry. The first was the arrest of four licensed bird's nest traders in a joint operation under Ops Bersepadu Khazanah involving the SFC Sibu team and marine police of Zone 5 on May 3 for buying their supply from illegal sources.

SFC added that it was taking appropriate measures to address these cases together with the bird’s nest associations. "The protection of Sarawak's invaluable wildlife resources is of SFC’s utmost importance for environmental sustainability as outlined in the PCDS 2030 ," it added. "During the dialogues, SFC and the associations agreed to work together to achieve mutual understanding on noise pollution, health and diseases, and economic issues related to the industry," it added.
