Unity has caused fury among game developers after announcing a pricing change that would see developers charged a fee each time a game is installed.
that it would soon charge developers a fee each time a game is installed. Starting January 1, 2024, Unity will slap developers with a"Unity Runtime Fee" for games that have passed a certain revenue threshold in the past 12 months and a lifetime install count.Unity states that developers who use Unity's Personal and Plus plans would be charged $0.20 per install once their game hits 200,000 downloads and makes $200,000 in revenue.
"This would harm not only us but fellow game studios of all budgets and sizes," Among Us studio Innersloth said. If this goes through, we'd delay content and features our players actually want to port our game elsewhere . But many developers won't have the time or means to do the same." However, when it came to installs made through Xbox Game Pass, Whitten said that developers such as Aggro Crab wouldn't be charged. Instead, it's the distributor of the subscription service that would have to pay, so in the case of Game Pass, it would be Microsoft who would have to stump up the cash.
