Unions are preparing to ramp up industrial action at the gas plants, giving notice of full-blown strikes at Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG facilities from next week.
Gorgon and Wheatstone contribute about 7 per cent ofThe notice came despite unions attending mediation with Chevron before the Fair Work Commission for the first time on Monday. The parties are set to meet every day this week in an attempt to, in Chevron’s words, “narrow points of difference”.
“Our bargaining claims will look more and more reasonable as Chevron’s Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG exports dry up,” it said. The union said the new protected action would also escalate work bans, including bans on maintenance work. Energy analyst Saul Kavonic said the new action gave the unions wide options of how much action to take.
“Lower-level strikes starting this Thursday look almost inevitable at this point, and these notices keep the unions’ options open to extend or escalate the strikes after the first week of industrial action,” he said.
