Surgeon William Mooney can be trusted to resume practise in “an honest and ethical manner” after earlier findings which included deliberately misleading authorities.

A surgeon whose substandard care resulted in the deaths of two patients, lied about a relationship with a third patient and provided a false medical certificate to cover up his failure to attend mandatory drug testing for cocaine use, has been given back his practising certificate after serving a year’s ban.

In April 2022, Mooney, who once boasted he performed “the highest number of nose jobs in Australia”, had his registration cancelled for professional misconduct. He was prohibited from seeking reinstatement for a year. Six months after losing his registration, Mooney was nabbed buying cocaine in Bondi from a “dial-a-dealer.” He pleaded guilty and received a 12-month bond. He told the court and later the tribunal he was collecting the cocaine as “an act of chivalry” for his partner.
