The government will move to recap work hours of international students after student visas became like a Ponzi scheme.
The approval rate for vocational student visas from Nepal in April was 85 per cent, but fell to 30 per cent in June and just 7 per cent in July.
“It’s too powerful an incentive that would drive and pervert behaviour by providers, and some students.” “We have learned that lesson, but we do need to tilt the playing field towards students in areas that we need, such as health sciences, nurses, medicine, ICT, engineering, defence and cybersecurity,” Mr Hill said.
It is understood both the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency, which oversees higher education, and the Australian Standards and Quality Agency, which has carriage of the vocational sector, have been increasingly concerned over compliance issues.“TEQSA will continue working with the sector in monitoring the transition to renewed compliance,” chief executive Alistair McLean said.
