UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the world must bring its emissions targets forward by a decade with a major spotlight now placed on China following its approval last year of the largest expansion of coal-fired power stations since 2015.
At least 3.3 billion people are now highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change according to the UN, with the majority living in developing countries.
Government Services Minister Bill Shorten told Sky News Australia host Peter Stefanovic the government had a"pretty ambitious plan" to tackle climate change. "We can make the biggest sizeable bite into our carbon emissions that the country has seen in over a decade."
