The Ukrainian counteroffensive’s lack of progress has come under criticism but Ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko maintains gains are being made.
| Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia is urging wavering supporters not to abandon his country despite growing international concern and criticism that theSince launching its northern summer counteroffensive after an influx of Western weapons and training in early June, Ukrainian forces have recaptured several hundred square kilometres of territory. They’ve also liberated a number of villages, albeit with heavy casualties and the loss of armoured vehicles.
Questions over how long the West will continue to support Ukraine militarily, coupled with the protracted fighting, have raised speculation in Ukraine over whether peace talks should begin.But Ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko said while his country badly needed long-range strike missiles to take out Russian combat capabilities, he defended the progress of the counteroffensive.
“As for the situation on the eastern fronts: at first sight, the number of enemy attacks seems to have decreased, but in fact this is the result of our armed forces having effectively destroyed the offensive potential of the Russian army. But this does not mean that they have abandoned their plans to continue offensive actions in these areas.”
Retired Australian army major-general Mick Ryan, who has become a sought-after international commentator on the war, said criticism that the counteroffensive was too slow was often ill-informed.
