U Sports and UBC athletics announced Thursday night that War Memorial Gym and the Doug Mitchell Sports Centre will feature both Final 8 tourneys March 13-16, 2025, marking the first time that one school has been home to the men’s and and the women’s basketball championships in the same year.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.

“We’re so looking forward to celebrating talented and dedicated male and female student-athletes from across the country in a unique way on the biggest stage at our fantastic venues,” Katie Toor, who’s the managing director of athletics and director at UBC, explained in a press release announcing the 2025 tournaments.

And men’s coach Kevin Hanson said: “To showcase the top 8 teams in the country is a privilege for us. It provides a great opportunity for our local basketball community to see the best teams in the country play live. We are looking forward to a magnificent event.” The UBC women’s volleyball team is hosting their nationals this season, running March 16-19 at War Memorial.Advertisement 4Hanson’s team is 13-6 and sitting in fifth spot in Canada West going into their league play finale Saturday against the host UVic Vikes. The Manitoba Bisons and UVic lead the way. UVic is No. 2 in the national rankings.
