As the other members of her crew, players and fans looked on, each stride she took around the ice was part of a history-making game. Paradise's Clare Howie made history Sunday night when she became the first female official to referee in the St. John’s Junior Hockey League. The 21-year-old worked the game between the Mount Pearl Junior Blades and the Southern Shore Junior Breakers at the Mount Pearl Glacier. “I didn't expect all of this, but … I'm kind of speechless about it,” said Howie. “It means the world to me. It gives me an opportunity to think ahead.”
