There is a growing awareness of the seriousness of sexual violence in conflict zones, but the U.S. is worried about promoting abortions
The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution condemning sexual violence in warfare, but only after language on a woman’s right to “reproductive health” was removed to avert a veto by the anti-abortion Trump administration.
“We are extremely surprised that some states asked to withdraw sexual and reproductive health rights” from the resolution text, said François Delattre, France’s ambassador to the world body. “This kind of omission is unacceptable and undermines the dignity of women.” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas collaborated with Angelina Jolie on a recent op-ed for The Washington Post, while Tuesday’s debate featured presentations from Denis Mukwege and Murad, joint recipients of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize.
“This is a pattern for the Trump administration, specifically on abortion and reproductive health generally,” said Rupaleem Bhuyan, a professor at the University of Toronto who has researched the impact of sexual violence in refugee and immigrant communities.
