A mandatory evacuation order remains in effect for hundreds of residents west of Edmonton as two wildfires burn out of control.

Both wildfires ignited last Saturday. The larger of the two is estimated to be 2,221 hectares in size and is located on both sides of Highway 22, three kilometres north of Highway 16, northwest of Evansburg.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Thirteen pieces of heavy equipment and six helicopters are assisting 75 firefighters to fight the blaze as of Monday. Two additional heavy helicopters with bucket capacity will be available if needed, along with air tankers. On Monday afternoon the mandatory evacuation order was expanded to include the hamlet of Wildwood, whose community hall was a reception area for evacuees from both fires.

Now, a reception centre has been set up at the Edson and District Leisure Centre located at 1021 49 St. in Edson. Evacuees are asked to take their pets with them and gather important documents, medication, and enough food and water to be away from home for at least three days.
