Two major weather events this year revealed just how long it can take to see crews clean up your Toronto neighbourhoods — a month or more, if you’re unlucky.
If you tried to walk anywhere downtown in January, you probably faced a trek over a slippery snowbank that, even for a Canadian city in winter, was a little much.A few months later, the spring’s strong “derecho” windstorm downed trees across the city, and many smaller branches and limbs sat uncollected on public streets.
Ward 12 Coun. Josh Matlow said he received “an avalanche” of complaints about sidewalk snow removal following the big January snowstorm. Dylan Reid of Walk Toronto said he was happy to hear that Toronto approved the clearing of all downtown sidewalks last winter, something his organization had long advocated for. But what was promised didn’t really materialize.
The January 2022 storm “presented a number of challenges, and clearing took longer to complete than during a typical winter event,” the spokesperson said.
