MELAKA: Two restaurants at hotels here have been ordered to close temporarily by the Melaka Health Department due to poor cleanliness levels.
Department director Dr Rusdi Abd Rahman said the restaurants were part of 44 hotels in the historic city that were inspected to ensure food safety during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
"The checks were conducted over two days," he said here on Friday , adding that the closure notices were issued under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.Dr Rusdi said the enforcement exercise focused on mosquito breeding grounds in hotels in addition to cleanliness and the presence of pests or vermin. Dr Rusdi said eight hotels were issued compound notices after mosquito breeding spots were found on their premises.
He added that 17 compound notices amounting to RM4,250 were issued to hotels that did not display No Smoking signs on the premises.He added that inspections of eateries will also be conducted regularly to ensure compliance with the relevant Acts and regulations.
