It took almost three weeks after interviewing the two candidates, Vanessa Hudson and Olivia Wirth, for the board to decide who would replace Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce.

With every day that went past, the likelihood Hudson would claim the top job increased. To some senior figures inside the company, it appeared an open secret that Joyce, who flagged his departure last year, was backing his chief financial officer over Wirth, the popular head of Qantas Loyalty.

“Vanessa was one of the names that came up constantly, and there was a lot of thought put towards her as an option. I’m not surprised she was chosen,” Clifford said. “In the aviation industry, numeracy is very important from route planning and fleet management to managing the balance sheet. Vanessa stands out in that regard.”The former public affairs manager for the Australian Tourist Commission, Wirth later worked in the office of Liberal MP Joe Hockey.
