A doctor couple helps to buy and fix up an old church in Wagga Wagga, NSW, fixing the town's chronic shortage of GPs.
abc.net.au/news/coptic-orthodox-christian-church-attracts-doctors-to-wagga-wagga/102337150Wagga Wagga has been blessed by the faith of two doctors and their quick diagnosis of how to remedy the town's chronic shortage of GPs.The building of a Coptic Orthodox Christian church helped one town recruit 47 overseas-trained doctors
Egyptian-born medics Ayman Shenouda and Samiha Azab moved to the regional New South Wales city for work, expecting to stay for only a year. First, they convinced their bishop in Sydney to establish a place of worship out west and then fundraised to buy an old church that happened to be on the market. Australia's English language requirements, for example, are "onerous" according to the report, which recommends bringing the standards in line with the United Kingdom and New Zealand.Lifting the age threshold for permanent skilled visa applicants over 45 could see an additional 4,500 doctors recruited in the same time frame.
"A lot of overseas-trained doctors are coming to Australia to have a chance at a better life, so I try to give them the security that they need to have to achieve their goals," Dr Shenouda said.Marian Dover says a recent tripling of some bulk-billing funding will help, but more change is needed.

NSW public service ‘not friendly’ to developers: Meriton founder Harry TriguboffMeriton’s founder and managing director Harry Triguboff is open to the government’s build-to-rent incentives but said the public service in New South Wales is “not friendly” to developers. “They got into their minds that they have to follow the rules and the rules do not take into account changes,” he told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood. “When I first built my flats, people had no cars and I build a few garages in Bondi and I sold them for 50 pounds each because nobody wanted them, and they charged rates on them like for a unit. “They changed their ways, they understand, but it’s too slow.” Mr Triguboff added that the build-to-rent incentives help but he doesn’t understand why a “little buyer” who buys from him can’t get the same incentive. “After all, these little buyers are the ones who provided rental accommodation for as long as I was building. “So why don’t you help them as well? We should.”
