A fight on New Year's Day in Toledo City, Philippines resulted in the deaths of two men.
Two men, Catalino Ortega Canillo, 50, and Alberto Canillo Sidon, 45, died after a fight on New Year 's Day, Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at Sitio Puro, Brgy. Lower Awihao, Toledo City. Catalino's brother-in-law, Andres Ortega Canillo, 59, a construction worker, was arrested. Catalino's wife, Miraflor Manangkila, 40, told Superbalita Cebu that they were at Andres' house playing videoke. After the New Year 's celebrations, they returned home. Catalino lay down to sleep but went outside to urinate.
Manangkila waited for Catalino, then checked on him through the window and saw him at her sister Susan's house. Catalino wanted to retrieve a tablet that Susan took from Miraflor and wanted to exchange it for a cellphone that Catalino had given Susan before. However, Susan refused because her child was still using it for online games. After much persuasion, Manangkila called Catalino back home to prevent further conflict, especially since he had been drinking alcoholic beverages. During the return, Catalino's brother-in-law, Alberto, suddenly attacked Catalino. Due to the alcohol consumption, no one could intervene, including Manangkila who sustained injuries to her knees and ankles. It was until Andres, Catalino's brother-in-law, saw the repeated attacks on his brother-in-law that he intervened and stopped the fight
