A drug haul worth $1.2 million has been found tucked inside jumpers allegedly imported from Canada by a Brisbane man.
An investigation was launched by the Australian Federal Police in March after Border Force officers identified anomalies in two packages addressed to an Alexandra Hills home.Officers opened the packages and allegedly found sealed plastic bags hidden within jumpers.Police covertly replaced the meth with a harmless substance, and sent one of the packages to the Alexandra Hills home, where Anthony Shane Amuru Montgomery-Garcia, 21, allegedly accepted the one-kilogram delivery.
Officers arrested and charged Montgomery-Garcia with importing as well as attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.Australian Federal PoliceAFP Detective Superintendent Adrian Telfer said illicit drug use significantly burdened the Australian economy and taxpayers.“The estimated total social cost for every kilogram of methamphetamine is more than $226,000, through crime, loss of productivity, emergency response and increased healthcare expenses,” he said.
Border force officers are highly trained to detect attempted illegal imports, ABF Commander James Copeman said.“We will detect your attempt, and working with our partners, you will face the full legal consequences.”
